The Open-Hearted Man

You were told you needed thicker skin to be a man. Has that skin become a wall? Is someone asking for more of you? The Open Hearted Man is a 12-week online program for men ready to show up differently in every relationship that matters.

This program is for you if:

  • You go quiet, get defensive, or shut down when conversations get hard

  • You pull away when she needs you, or push harder when she pulls away

  • You bury what you feel in work, a screen, a game, or a drink

  • You've been called "too nice" and secretly feel resentful about it

  • Your partner is growing, and part of you worries about where that leaves you

  • You want to be a different kind of father than the one you had

  • You have plenty of buddies but almost no one you can really talk to

  • You're done performing strength and ready to actually feel it

Outcomes you can Expect:

At the heart of this work is becoming a safe man: someone whose presence helps the people around him settle instead of brace.

  • Safe to yourself. You feel your emotions without being run by them or numbing them, and you understand why your nervous system reacts the way it does.

  • Safe to your partner. You can hear her without defending or collapsing, offer a real apology, and repair after a rupture instead of stonewalling.

  • Secure as she grows. Your self-worth stands on its own, so you can celebrate her growth instead of feeling threatened by it.

  • Present as a father. You recognize the patterns you inherited and choose which ones end with you.

  • Connected to other men. You build real friendships that go deeper than sports and drinking.

  • Grounded in a new kind of strength. You stop performing "nice" and start living from integrity, where vulnerability is part of your strength, not the opposite of it.

Meet Andrea:

I'm Andrea Quast-Mortello, LCSW, SEP, and for 20 years I've worked as a psychotherapist with individuals and couples, helping them heal relational trauma and change the patterns that keep them stuck. Again and again in that work, I've watched good men struggle to give the people they love what they're asking for. That isn't because they don't care. It's because no one ever showed them how. Helping men build emotional awareness and become a safe, steady presence in their relationships has become one of the most meaningful parts of my practice, and The Open-Hearted Man grew out of that work.

My approach combines Somatic Experiencing, Integral Somatic Psychology, Relational Life Therapy, and family-of-origin work, so we don't stop at talking about change. We work with the nervous system and the early wounds underneath it, which is where lasting change happens. As a woman who has sat with countless couples, I also bring a view many men never get: what partners actually need, and what it feels like to be on the other side of a man who shuts down, and of one who shows up. In this program you'll get honest guidance, no judgment, and a room full of men doing the same work alongside you.

Why I choose to work with men:

I’m drawn to working with men because I’ve seen what becomes possible when men have a place to meet themselves honestly, in community with other men. I want to create that place: somewhere men can deepen their understanding of themselves, learn how to be in relationship with the people in their lives, and find a way forward that brings connection and joy.

After twenty years of working with couples and trauma, I understand a great deal about why we behave the way we do. What has always fascinated me is how few men were ever shown how what they learned, or never learned, shapes the way they move through the world. I want to build that bridge.

This is personal for me too. I went through a painful divorce, and it shook my faith in how deeply people can heal and change. What I came back to, in my work and in my own relationships, is that change is possible when a person is willing to see himself. Where shame and pain have gone underground, there is little to reach. Choice is powerful.

I feel called to offer this to men who are brave enough to meet themselves and do the work of coming home to who they truly are.

FAQs

Is this therapy?
No. The Open-Hearted Man is an educational and coaching program, not a replacement for individual or couples therapy. It draws on my 20 years as a licensed clinical social worker and Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, so the work goes deep, but it is not clinical treatment. If you're looking for one-on-one therapy, you can [book a consultation].

How does the program work?
We meet online for 12 weeks as a small group. Each week we take on one theme, like stonewalling, the pursuer-distancer dance, or what a real apology looks like, and pair teaching with somatic practices and honest discussion. [Add session length, day/time, and whether calls are recorded.]

How much time will it take each week?
Plan on [X] hours: the live session plus [short practices or reflection between calls].

Do I need to be in a relationship?
No. Some men join because their marriage is struggling, some are single or divorced, and some just want to understand themselves better. Everything you learn carries into every relationship you have, including with your kids, friends, and yourself.

My partner sent me this. Will it still work if it wasn't my idea?
Many men arrive that way. What matters is that you're willing to show up and be honest once you're here. Plenty of men who came in skeptical end up getting the most out of it.

I'm not a "feelings" guy. Will this be uncomfortable?
Probably, at times. That's part of the work. There's no shaming and no pressure to share more than you're ready to. Most men find it's a relief to finally be in a room where they don't have to pretend.

Will what I share stay private?
Yes. Every participant agrees to keep what's shared in the group confidential, and we set those agreements together on day one.
